(Herschel, Sudáfrica, 1948). Novelista, poeta y dramaturgo sudafricano. Estudió en Sudáfrica, Lesotho y el Reino Unido. Mda es autor de obras como We Shall Sing for the Fatherland and Other Plays, And the Girls in the Sunday Dresses, Fools, Bells and the Habit of Eating (teatro), Bits of Debris (poesía), Ways of Dying, She Plays with the Darkness, The Heart of Redness (ganadora del Commonwealth Writers Prize en 2001), The Whale Caller, Cion o The Madonna of Excelsior (novela), entre otras. Ha sido nombrado Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Ciudad del Cabo y sus novelas han sido traducidas a 21 idiomas. Asimismo, Mda ha sido profesor visitante en Yale y en la Universidad de Vermont y actualmente es profesor en el Departamento de Inglés de la Universidad de Ohio (Athens, Ohio, Estados Unidos). Además, Zakes Mda es miembro fundador y consejero del African Writers Trust.
